SaaS and software explainer videos

Viseon: a 50 second SaaS explainer.

Data Pipeline: 40 seconds on turning raw data into stories.

Carton Cloud: a 56 second explainer for logistics software.

What works in software videos: software is abstract, so the video has to show it doing a job for someone. Simplified screens, one user and one task are clearer than a tour of every feature. More on this in our SaaS and app explainer videos.

App explainer videos

Say After: an app that lets you record videos, voice notes and messages, scheduled to reach your loved ones in the future. 1:09.

Why it works: it opens with a feeling everyone knows, wanting to hear the voice of someone who is gone, before it names the app. By the time the product appears, the viewer already wants it to exist.

The Clean Living Community: a 52 second explainer for an addiction recovery app.

Health explainer videos

Yerba: personalized treatment reports for people with breast cancer. 1:03.

Why it works: the first line names the patient’s real problem: a diagnosis feels overwhelming and clear information is hard to find. The solution only arrives after that, and the calm, clean style suits the subject.

Cannabidiol: a 2 minute explainer about CBD.

Clinics and health apps use videos like these to explain a diagnosis, a procedure or an app to patients. More on how we make them: healthcare animation and patient education videos.

What works in health videos: when the audience is still learning the basics, a longer educational video can earn its length by answering one question at a time.

Finance and crypto explainer videos

AFI: a 2:48 explainer on how its members’ policies responded to COVID 19 and financial inclusion.

Why it works: it leads with context and a hard number, 68% of the members’ policy changes, so a policy story feels concrete. Longer videos like this one need a clear structure, because the audience is reading data, not watching an ad.

Tokeneo: a 1:09 explainer for a cryptocurrency.

Rate My Tate: a 1:29 explainer on how a rating system works.

What works in finance videos: money and trust go together, so a finance video should slow down on how the system works and show the key numbers on screen instead of only saying them.

E-commerce and logistics explainer videos

Bábaco: fulfillment and shipment tracking explained in 2:30.

Why it works: it opens with a one line idea, every shipment has a journey, and then follows that journey from origin to destination. One metaphor holds the whole video together.

Audio Plugin Deals: a 4 minute explainer for an online store of audio plugins.

Food brand explainer video

Albatool Honey: a 1 minute explainer for a honey producer.

What works for food brands: consumer brands sell a feeling as much as a product, so a short video built on the brand’s world does more than a list of benefits.

Education and nonprofit explainer videos

Captain Cook: a 1:47 educational story.

Tibet Relief Fund: a 56 second explainer for an NGO.

What works for nonprofits: donors give to people, not to programs. A short video that shows who is helped and what a gift does is the strongest case an NGO can put on its home page.

Real estate explainer videos

John White: a 32 second commercial for a realtor and his team.

Why it works: the agent introduces himself in the first line, gives one credential and ends with one action: reach out today. Thirty seconds is enough when the message is that simple. More ads like this one, explained one by one, in our animated ad examples.

HAH Parking: a 34 second vertical explainer on parking lots as an investment.

Why it works: big numbers on screen and a short line per scene, built vertical for social feeds where people scroll with the sound off.

What the best explainer videos have in common

  1. They open with the viewer, not the company. Yerba starts with the diagnosis, Say After with a loss. The product comes second.
  2. One idea holds the video together. Bábaco’s shipment journey is the spine of a 2:30 video.
  3. Numbers are shown, not just said. AFI and HAH Parking put the key figure on screen.
  4. They end with one action. Visit, sign up, reach out: one call to action, not three.
  5. The length fits the job. A realtor’s introduction needs 32 seconds. A policy report needs almost 3 minutes.

How long should an explainer video be?

In this set, 11 of the 18 videos run between 40 and 90 seconds, and the median is just over a minute. The shortest, a realtor’s commercial, runs 32 seconds; the longest, for an online store, runs 4 minutes. Start from what the viewer needs to understand, then cut until every line earns its place. Our explainer video script template shows how many words fit each length.
